A girl and a robot thinking together

Think it through together · A little story

In a game, the robot has already moved to a new spot, but an old position update is missing. Does it have to wait for that update before continuing?

Lay out the process

Follow the numbered steps, then explain them in your own words
  1. Create a messageThe current position
  2. Send a datagramHand it to the network
  3. It may be lostUDP does not retransmit automatically
  4. The app decidesSkip it or handle recovery itself

UDP provides datagram delivery but does not itself guarantee reliable or ordered arrival.

With fewer waiting mechanisms, an application can design communication for its own needs. A real-time app may care more about the newest update, or it may add acknowledgments, error correction, or retransmission on top of UDP.

Using UDP does not mean ignoring every error. It means that these needs have to be handled elsewhere when required.

Your turn to try

Can a money-transfer service ignore lost data just because it uses UDP?

Have you thought it through? Open for an explanation

No. Important operations still need reliable handling and acknowledgments. A protocol’s characteristics cannot replace correctness in the application.

Take away one discovery

UDP provides datagram delivery but does not itself guarantee reliable or ordered arrival.

Try covering the diagram above and explaining each step to someone in your family. If one step is hard to explain, go back and look at that card again.
