A girl and a robot thinking together

Think it through together · A little story

A girl asks the robot to deliver a complete story: no sentence can be missing, and the ending must not arrive before the beginning.

Lay out the process

Follow the numbered steps, then explain them in your own words
  1. Number the dataTrack byte order
  2. AcknowledgeKnow what has arrived
  3. RetransmitSend needed data again
  4. DeliverThe application reads it in order

TCP provides applications with a reliable, ordered byte stream.

It tracks progress using mechanisms such as sequence numbers and acknowledgments, and retransmits when needed. Even if lower-level packets arrive out of order, TCP arranges the data according to its rules before providing it to the application.

The “stream” is like a continuous ribbon of text. It does not preserve the boundaries of each message the application sent, so the application still needs to know how to separate messages.

Your turn to try

If TCP acknowledges that data arrived, does that prove your friend has read and understood the story?

Have you thought it through? Open for an explanation

No. A transport acknowledgment does not mean a person has read it, nor does it mean the application has completed its task.

Take away one discovery

TCP provides applications with a reliable, ordered byte stream.

Try covering the diagram above and explaining each step to someone in your family. If one step is hard to explain, go back and look at that card again.
