Think Together · Start with a Short Story
The girl writes a crooked 3. The robot must choose a digit from 0 to 9. First, it turns the light and dark squares into numbers.
Lay Out the Process
- InputPixels of a handwritten digit
- CalculateThe network extracts and combines representations
- OutputScores for ten categories
- ChooseGive a predicted digit
Digit recognition is an image classification task.
A model is trained with many examples written in different ways, then calculates a score for each category on a new image. Blurry handwriting, rotation, or a changed background can make the task harder.
For evaluation, use examples that were not used for training and check which digits are easiest to confuse.
Now You Try
If you write a 1 so it looks a lot like a 7 and the model gets it wrong, should you blame the calculator for being bad at arithmetic?

No. This involves visual patterns and training coverage, not simple integer addition. An ambiguous input can also affect the prediction.
One Idea to Take Away
Digit recognition is an image classification task.
Try covering the diagram above and explaining each step to someone in your family. If one step is hard to explain, return to that card and look again.
