The robot can answer a riddle. The girl wonders: if it answers like a person, does that mean it also has feelings inside?
Lay Out the Process
- Observe abilitiesWhat problems can it solve?
- Look at the processCalculations and models
- Check the resultIt may succeed or fail
- Separate experienceAn answer alone cannot tell us
AI can show abilities such as reasoning, planning, and language processing, but that does not prove it has subjective feelings.
We can test how well it performs a task, but hearing it say “I am happy” does not prove it truly feels happy. Those words may simply be generated language.
When discussing “thinking,” first explain whether you mean problem-solving ability or consciousness and experience. That helps avoid mixing them up.
Now You Try
AI says, “I am afraid of being shut down.” Is that enough to prove it is really afraid?
