Think Together · Start with a Short Story
At the beginning, the girl gives the robot an imaginary name. Later it still remembers. Is it looking at a temporary note, or did it learn the name forever?
Lay Out the Process
- ContextThe conversation provided now
- External memoryAn app may save information
- Model parametersPatterns formed through training
AI “memory” may mean the current context, information saved by an app, or knowledge in trained parameters. These are different things.
A model may reuse a name in the current conversation simply because it is still in the input. Some apps separately save preferences, but whether they do depends on their features and settings.
Context has a limited length, and older messages may no longer be fully available to the model.
Now You Try
In a new conversation with no history, is it normal if the model does not remember the character name you just made up?

It may be normal because the new input does not include that information. Check separately whether the app has extra memory features.
One Idea to Take Away

Try covering the diagram above and explaining each step to someone in your family. If one step is hard to explain, return to that card and look again.
