Let’s think it through · Start with a story
The girl has written a task list, but the CPU does not work directly from C++ text. What has to translate it first?
Break down the process
- Source codeC++ written by a person
- Compile and linkTranslate and combine
- ExecutableReady to run
- RunOnly now does it produce output
A compiler translates source code into object code, and the linker combines the parts that are needed.
It is like turning a design into a working machine: finishing the plans and starting the machine are two different things. The program performs input and output when it runs.
01What exactly is compilation?
Compilation is the process in which a compiler reads source code, analyzes its structure and meaning, and generates a lower-level representation or object code.
For C++, compilation is a core stage in building an executable program, but it is not the whole process.
02What does a compiler do?
Parse syntax
Check the structure of the code.
Check semantics
Check types, names, and more.
Generate code
Translate it into object code.
Optimize
Improve the generated result.
03Why can it find some errors?
int x = "hello";This usually produces a type-related compiler diagnostic because a string literal cannot be assigned directly to an ordinary int.
04Are compilation and linking the same thing?
Compilation
Translate source files into object code and check language rules.
Linking
Connect symbols from object files and libraries to build the final program.
05Does the compiler optimize code, too?
Yes. Modern compilers may remove useless calculations, improve loops, or combine expressions, while still following the language rules.
06What is the difference between a compile error and a runtime error?
Compile error
The code cannot be built successfully.
Runtime error
An exception or invalid operation occurs while the program runs.
Logic error
The program runs, but the answer is wrong.
What you have learned
- Compilation analyzes source code and generates lower-level code or object code.
- A compiler checks rules involving syntax, types, and names, and may also optimize.
- A complete C++ build can include preprocessing, compiling, assembling, and linking.
- Successful compilation does not guarantee that the program logic is correct.
Your turn
The score counter should add 2, but you accidentally wrote subtraction. Will the compiler definitely catch it?
Have an answer? Click to see the explanation
Not necessarily. Subtraction is valid, and the compiler usually does not know your scoring rules. Test the program with examples whose answers you already know.
