Think it through together · A little story
A girl notices that some websites have www and some do not. The robot asks, “Can it still be a website without it?”
Lay out the process
- Full namewww.example.com
- wwwA common subdomain label
- example.comCan also be configured to serve a website
www comes from World Wide Web and is often used as a label in a website’s hostname.
It is a convention, not a prefix every website must use. An administrator can configure the www and non-www names to point to the same service or to different services.
The site you reach depends on the full domain name and its configuration.
Your turn to try
Will www.example.com and example.com definitely show the same content?
Have you thought it through? Open for an explanation
Not necessarily. They do so only if the services are configured to connect them. Similar-looking names do not prove they are the same.

Try covering the diagram above and explaining each step to someone in your family. If one step is hard to explain, go back and look at that card again.
