Think it through together · A little story
A photo downloads quickly, but the robot responds a moment late in a game. The girl assumes that “fast internet” should make everything fast.
Lay out the process
- DownloadingHow much arrives per unit of time matters
- Game controlsHow long a response takes matters
- InstabilityJitter and packet loss matter too
Downloads usually depend more on sustained throughput, while interactive games are also very sensitive to latency, jitter, and packet loss.
A wide road can carry many cars at once, but a car still takes a long time to arrive if the destination is far away. Network congestion can also make controls feel slow because data has to wait in a queue.
Game stuttering can also come from the performance of the local device, not just the network.
Your turn to try
If you upgrade your monitor, will the network round-trip time to a distant server definitely go down?
Have you thought it through? Open for an explanation
No. A display usually does not change the network route. It may affect how smooth the picture looks, but it cannot solve every kind of network delay.
Take away one discovery
Downloads usually depend more on sustained throughput, while interactive games are also very sensitive to latency, jitter, and packet loss.
Try covering the diagram above and explaining each step to someone in your family. If one step is hard to explain, go back and look at that card again.
