A girl and a robot thinking together

Think it through together · A little story

A girl says “Hello,” but the robot receives a string of signals. How does it know which pattern means a greeting and which means a picture?

Lay out the process

Follow the numbered steps, then explain them in your own words
  1. PrepareEncode text as data
  2. SendThe network card sends signals
  3. ReceiveThe other end recovers the data
  4. InterpretPrograms read it according to the agreement

Devices must follow the same protocols for communication: agreed rules for data formats and exchange steps.

Imagine two people agree that “one knock means start, two knocks mean stop.” With an agreement, they do not have to guess. Real protocols specify much more, including destination addresses, data lengths, and how to handle errors.

A network card handles part of the network connection, while an application interprets a received chat message or file.

Your turn to try

What might happen if the two sides do not agree on what the same number encoding means?

Have you thought it through? Open for an explanation

The receiver may misread the data or fail to recognize it. Delivery is not the same as understanding; formats and protocols must match too.

Take away one discovery

Devices must follow the same protocols for communication: agreed rules for data formats and exchange steps.

Try covering the diagram above and explaining each step to someone in your family. If one step is hard to explain, go back and look at that card again.
