A computer is a machine that can receive information, process it, produce a result, and save data. It does not have to look like a desktop PC.
01Do not judge a computer by its shape
Phones, tablets, game consoles, smartwatches, and cars can contain computers too. Their shapes and controls are different, but they all work with information.
Desktop computer
Uses a keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
Phone
Uses a touch screen, camera, and network.
Tablet
Has a large touch screen for learning and drawing.
Game console
Uses game controls to run games.
Smartwatch
Tracks time, movement, and health data.
02The three basic jobs
Computers receive input, process information, and produce output. Storage keeps files and programs for later.
Receive input
A tap, key press, picture, or sound gives the computer information.
Process information
The processor follows program instructions and works with the data.
Produce output
A screen, speaker, light, or motor shows the result.
03How does it know what to do?
A program is a set of instructions. It tells the machine what information to receive, how to process it, and when to show or save a result.
A program is like a task list
- Receive information.
- Follow instructions.
- Make a decision or calculation.
- Show the result and save it when needed.
04A small example: tapping “Play”
Input
Your finger taps the Play button.
Process
The program finds the video and prepares it.
Output
The video appears and sound comes from the speaker.
If you tap Save, the computer stores the file so you can open it later.

- It receives input, processes information, and produces output.
- Programs give it instructions.
- Storage keeps data for later.
- Phones, tablets, consoles, and watches can all contain computers.
