Think Together · Start with a Short Story
The girl only says, “Write something,” so the robot does not know who it is for or what to write. A prompt is the task information given to a model.
Lay Out the Process
- GoalWhat should it do?
- BackgroundReader and situation
- RequirementsLength and format
- Input materialWhat should it refer to?
A prompt is usually an input given to a model. It may include a task, background, examples, or materials.
Explaining what you need helps the model produce a relevant result. A prompt is not a magic password, and it does not need piles of exaggerated role titles.
When facts matter, ask the model to distinguish known information from uncertain details, then verify them yourself.
Now You Try
What does “Write three sentences about the Moon for a ten-year-old reader” tell the model that “Write something” does not?

Try covering the diagram above and explaining each step to someone in your family. If one step is hard to explain, return to that card and look again.
